Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme

Students In The Metalwork RoomThis is the traditional Leaving Certificate with a bonus subject known as LCVP Link Modules.

Students take 7 subjects for the Leaving Certificate - Irish, English, Maths and 4 others. The other subjects include Engineering, Building Construction, Business, Biology, Social & Scientific, History, Art and French.

The Link Modules consists of Enterprise Education and Preparation for Work.

Students who are not taking French for the Leaving Certificate must take the subject, Ab Initio French (Junior Certificate standard) as part of the Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme. Computer Applications and Work Experience are also important elements of the course. An advantage of the course is that it gives students an insight into the world of work as well as enabling them to develop skills which will help them in further education and training.

Enterprise Education
All students at Senior Cycle are encouraged to set up and run their own mini-enterprise. This programme allows students the opportunity to form groups, produce and sell products or to provide services. As a result of such activities students learn more about market research, production, decision making, taking risks and selling techniques. Groups in the past have been involved in making slate mirrors, picture frames, bird houses and the provision of such services as farm relief services. The school shop is also incorporated into the enterprise education of all 5th year students.

Preparation for Work
In this module, students learn job application skills, complete a career investigation and prepare for work experience which takes place in a two week block in 5th year.

Assessment of the Link Modules
As part of their assessment for this subject, students complete a portfolio of course work in 6th year and sit an exam in May of that year. Students will receive a Pass, Merit or distinction grade for this subject.

Points for College
The Link Modules are awarded points (up to a maximum of 70 points) which may be used for entry to third level colleges.
